Price changes & Ads on Neon from 11 January 2024 Print

How are Neon’s prices changing in January 2024?

From 11 January 2024, the price of Neon's monthly Standard Plan is increasing to $19.99 per month, and our Annual Plan is increasing to $199.99 per year. There will be no price change to our Basic Plan.

What ads will there be on Neon?

On 11 January 2024 we’re introducing ads to Neon Plans. Our Basic with Ads Plan will have ads both during video playback and on pause. For Neon Standard and Annual plans, we’re introducing exit-able ads on pause which means viewers will continue to enjoy an uninterrupted video-watching experience.  Kids’ content on all plans will not have any ads.

What is happening to the Basic Plan?

On 11 January 2024, the Basic Plan will become the ‘Basic with Ads Plan’. This Basic with Ads Plan will have ads both during video playback and on pause. The Basic with Ads Plan will be upgraded to include being able to stream HD content (previously Basic was limited to SD) and enjoy up to 2 concurrent streams and 5 profiles. Neon customers will have the ability to downgrade their viewing to SD while viewing on Mobile and Web with the ‘Data Saver’ option. This function is not currently available for all our TV apps.

New Neon Plan Overview:

Why are you increasing the Standard and Annual Price and introducing ads?

With content costs increasing, we have to look at ways of subsidising those costs. Introducing ads on Neon helps us keep price increases at a minimum while still providing you with premium shows like House of the Dragon, True Detective, Yellowstone and the latest blockbuster movies whilst continuing to invest in compelling and quality content. The types of ads we present are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible to minimise any interruptions to your viewing experience. This is especially the case with the Standard and Annual Plans where the on-pause ads can be closed at any time.

Will all Neon plan types have ads?

Yes, Basic subscriptions will have in-video stream ads and pause ads while Standard and Annual plans will only have exit-able pause ads.  Kids' content on all plans will not have ads.

What is an ‘on-pause’ ad and what is an ‘in-video stream’ ad?

An ‘on-pause’ ad is a still ad image that shows when you pause the video you are watching. Users will see the normal pause screen for a few seconds, and if they remain on pause for more than a few seconds, they will be shown the ad. Users are able to dismiss this ad at any time to return to their normal pause screen. These ads will apply to all Neon Plans.

An ‘in-video stream’ ad is a video ad that will play before the start of the video and may play during video playback. At launch, you can expect to see a few minutes of ads per hour. Also, there will be no ads in Kids' content. In-video stream ads will only be shown to users on the Basic Plan.

Will all Neon content now have ads?

No, for launch – due to licensing restrictions, advertising will only be available on some TV shows & movies and there will be no advertising on Kids' content. Movies that are rented will contain no ads. Additionally, Movies on the Basic with Ads plan won’t be interrupted by video ads once you’ve started watching.

How many in-video stream ads can I expect on the Basic subscription type?

At launch, you can expect to see a few minutes of ads per hour. Also, there will be no ads in Kids' content.

Will I be stuck watching the same ad over and over?

No, we have systems in place to ensure you will only see the same ad a limited number of times.

Can I skip or fast-forward through the ads on Neon?

You can’t skip or fast-forward through video ads on a Neon Basic plan, but if you subscribe to a Standard or Annual plan you won’t see in-video ads and you will be able to close pause ads at any time.

How do I change my plan?

You can change your Neon plan at any time by following these steps:

  • Sign in to your Neon account
  • Under Manage Your Subscription select Change Plan. (Please note, you won’t be able to see Change Plan if you already have upgraded and downgraded your plan once in the same billing period)
  • Choose the desired plan, then select Select [Type] Plan. (e.g. “Select Annual Plan”)

A plan upgrade takes effect immediately so you can enjoy all of the added features. Since Neon is a prepaid service, on upgrade you will be charged the difference between what you have already paid for your current month and the balance due for your new plan.

A plan downgrade with a lower price takes effect on your next billing date. You can continue to use the features of the higher plan until your next billing date.

For example, you can upgrade from Basic to Standard or from Standard to Annual in the same month. However, if you downgrade your plan, your downgrade will only take effect on your next billing date.

If you wish to cancel your plan, find out how here.

Is anything else changing?

We’ve made some updates to our Privacy Policy, which you can read about here.

No one notified me about this change!

All customers were informed of the price change via email on 6 December 2023. In-app messaging was also shown on the app from 6 December 2023 to inform users of the upcoming changes.

Will my TV still be able to run Neon?

Unfortunately we’re no longer able to support the TVs listed below. This is because these TV models aren’t able to meet our most recent system requirements.

  • 2013 - 2016 Samsung Tizen and Orsay TVs
  • Panasonic TVs prior to 2017
  • LG TVs prior to 2018
  • Sony TVs that do not support Android TV or Google TV

We understand this is disappointing and we tried all we can before retiring these models. You can still watch your favourite shows or movies on your big screen by using the cast and Airplay features or even connect your laptop to the TV via HDMI.

Here’s the full catalogue of devices we support.

How will I be billed after the price change?

You will continue to be billed by Neon (unless you choose to be billed by Spark, please see below). Your billing date will stay the same. Your primary payment method will remain the same. To cancel or change your billing via Spark, please contact Spark directly. Click here for more information.

I use Neon with a promo code – will that still work after the price change?

If you are on a Neon promo code, you will still be eligible for the discount. The discount will be applied to the new monthly Standard Plan price if the voucher is in use after 11 January.

What if I'm a Spark customer?
